Man commits suicide over sickness

A 57-year-old well-known business tycoon in Mangochi District identified as Farouk Jussab Maluk has shot himself to death with his licensed shotgun after being diagnosed with a disease that affected his ability to walk.

The incident occurred on January 7, 2023 at Ndata location in the area of Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi.

According to the deceased’ nephew Maxwell Daudi, the two were staying together at the said location after Maluk separated with his wife.

Maluk who owned Tools and Components Glass Shop within the township was last year advised by doctors to go through an operation procedure to which he refused.

Maluk on January 5, 2023 visited Mwaiwathu Hospital in Blantyre for further medical treatment where the doctors also recommended that he go through an operation to amputate the both legs.

He returned home hopelessly and informed his nephew that he was tired of taking drugs. Two days later, he locked himself in the room and shot himself on the chest with the shotgun.

The matter was reported at Mangochi Police Station who rushed to the scene and found him in a pool of blood and the said gun was beside him. His dead body was taken to Mangochi District Hospital where loss of blood has been indicated as the cause of death.

Police are therefore appealing to the public to refrain from taking their own lives whenever they face challenges in life. They should rather seek counselling or share issues to colleagues.

He hailed from Mona Village, Traditional Authority Tengani in Nsanje.
