The Malawian private bus company, Kwezy Bus Services, has launched a Netball Bonanza in the Northern Region, marking a significant step towards supporting local sports development.

The official launch took place on August 24, 2024, at the Katoto Netball Court in Mzuzu. The event began with a colorful parade from Mzuzu Upper Stadium to Katoto Ground, drawing attention from the public and creating an electrifying atmosphere.

This Bonanza will feature 16 netball teams from all eight football districts in the Northern Region, with two teams representing each district. The competition promises to be intense and exciting, with players from across the region vying for glory.

Kwezy Bus Services has committed K6 million to sponsor the event, with the winning team set to pocket K1 million. Additional prizes will be awarded to teams and players in various categories, adding to the competitive spirit.

Speaking during the launch, Mapulanga Francisco Vitsitsi, the regional manager for Kwezy Bus Services, expressed his pride in the company’s involvement in the tournament. He highlighted that this initiative is part of celebrating Kwezy’s seven years of service in August and their recent recognition as the best passenger transport company in Malawi by the Consumers Choice Awards. Vitsitsi emphasized that giving back to the community aligns with their corporate social responsibility objectives.

Vitsotso also mentioned that the sponsorship’s sustainability would depend on how well the tournament is managed, suggesting that this could be the start of a lasting partnership between Kwezy and netball in the region.

On behalf of the Northern Region Netball Association, General Secretary Ken Phiri expressed deep gratitude for the sponsorship. He acknowledged that the Kwezy Netball Bonanza came at a crucial time when netball sponsorship in the region was at an all-time low.

Phiri went on to describe the tournament as a platform for unearthing hidden talent in the region. He believes the Bonanza will provide young girls with the opportunity to showcase their skills and potentially elevate their game to the national level.

He further added that such initiatives are vital for the growth of netball, which often lacks the financial support and visibility of other sports in the country. This Bonanza could serve as a stepping stone for many players aspiring to represent Malawi.

The launch event concluded with an exciting match between Golden Balls and Shoprite, where Golden Balls emerged victorious with a scoreline of 23 to 19 baskets. This opener set the tone for what promises to be a thrilling tournament.

The Kwezy Netball Bonanza is expected to bring more excitement and energy to the region’s sporting
