Kawale Police Station through its lower formation of Area 23 Police Unit has assured residents with different disabilities within its policing area on access to justice.
The call has been made today Thursday, October 7, 2021 during a meeting that Area 23 community policing branch conducted for the people with different degrees of disabilities.
Disabled Women in Africa (DIWA) joined the team to appreciate the strides taken by Police in ensuring that justice is accessible to the disabled.
Area 23 community policing cordinator, Inspector Funny Majoni, assured the gathering that Police in the area are doing their best to make sure that justice is inclusive to the disabled.
“Let me encourage all the disabled, parents and guardians to our brothers and sisters with disabilities that Police is open to render the best service to you so that you get justice in any matter that has infringed your rights. Come and report to police, never suffer in silence,” said Majoni.
She however, lamented lack of expertise in some sign languages among officers which poses as a hitch in execution of justice, citing that some relevant information may be missed during statement taking especially from the dumb and deaf clients.
The gap between officers and clients of this nature was exposed during a play that was staged by officers.
Speaking on the same gathering, DIWA representative, Bernadette Vazi who was accompanied by officials from MACOHA appreciated the efforts done by Kawale Police and further promised to rally behind the idea of reporting to Police issues that happen to people with disabilities so that they get justice like anyone else.
“You need to lay a foundation of justice by reporting to the relevant authorities so that justice is served,” Vazi said.
Summarising the meeting, one MACOHA official, Patrick Chimphanga, cited that the responsibility rests upon the shoulders of everybody in the society so that the disabled access justice as well.
“Let’s join the Police in ensuring that there is equitable in all services rendered in our community,” lamented Chimphanga.
