KABAZA KILLED 206 PEOPLE LAST YEAR – SAYS CHIMWENDO BANDA

The minister of Homeland Security Richard Chimwendo Banda has revealed that about 206 people died last year due to Motorcycle accidents.

Banda revealed this at area 30 Police headquarters in Lilongwe during an interface meeting with the representatives of Kabaza (motorcycle taxi) operators, he held the meeting together with the Inspector General of Police Dr George Kainja.

Banda says hospitals have been overwhelmed with Kabaza accidents and this has to be looked at before many lives are lost.

On his part Kainja said they confiscated about 20, 000 motorcycles across the country and some of them have been given back to the owners.

The Police chief added that about 7821 motorcycles are still in their custody.

“Motorcycles should be registered and insured, they should not carry more than one passenger, operator and the passenger should put on helmet and that the operator should have a driver’s licence,” Said Kainja.

The meeting is currently underway in Lilongwe, hopes are high that lasting solutions will be agreed by the end of today.
