This year’s commemorations for the people who were killed during mass protests on July 20 2011 are underway at the Zolozolo cemetery in Mzuzu.
Reading from the book of Jeremiah 31:15-17 the clergy have described freedom fighting as costly hence the need for honoring all the freedom fighters in the country.
Notable figures at the occasion include Minister of National Unity, Timothy Mtambo, President of the Freedom Party who is also former Vice president Khumbo Kachali, MCP Vice President for the North Harry Mkandawire, UTM Publicity Secretary Frank Mwenefumbo, Representative of the Alliance for Democracy and representatives of members of the bereaved families.
Among others, there will be laying of wreaths on the tombstones.
More than 20 people were killed during the July 20, 2011 demonstrations against former president Bingu wa Mutharika regime.-
