Government Seeks International Assistance for Plane Crash Investigation

The governments of the United Kingdom, United States, and Germany have been formally requested to assist in the investigation into the plane crash that tragically claimed the lives of Vice President Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima and eight others. This was disclosed by the Minister of Information and Digitalisation, Moses Kunkuyu, during a press briefing at the Central Office of Information in Lilongwe.

Minister Kunkuyu announced that the German government has responded positively to the request. A team of German experts is expected to arrive in the country by Saturday, June 22, 2024, to commence their investigation. These experts will have unrestricted access to the crash site, relevant personnel, and institutions to ensure a comprehensive inquiry.

This move follows President Lazarus Chakwera’s commitment to conducting a thorough and independent investigation into the circumstances and probable causes of the plane crash. “As you recall, His Excellency the President pledged and assured the nation that the plane crash that took the lives of our Vice President and the other eight officials will be investigated thoroughly and independently,” Kunkuyu stated.

In addition, Minister Kunkuyu announced that President Chakwera has directed that the 60th Independence Anniversary of Malawi be commemorated with prayers only, foregoing the usual celebratory events. This directive is intended to honor the late Vice President Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima and the other victims of the crash. “The President wishes that as we are commemorating our Independence we honour the life and contribution to our nation of our Vice President and the other officials that lost their lives,” Kunkuyu said.

The nation awaits further updates as the German experts begin their investigation, with hopes that the inquiry will provide clarity and closure on this national tragedy.
