ESCOM TO UPGRADE TOKEN SYSTEM

Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) is set to upgrade its electricity recharge token system for prepaid metres effective 1 June this year.

Speaking to journalists in Blantyre during a media briefing, ESCOM’s Chief Operating Officer, Maxwell Mulimakwenda said customers who will not upgrade their electricity metres by 24 November 2024, their electricity metres will cease to dispense electricity once units have run out.

“Electricity tokens using the current system should be loaded into the metres before upgrading the metres as failure to do so will make the old tokens unusable into the newly upgraded system,” said Mulimakwenda.

The upgrade of electricity metres is in compliance with the new international requirements for transfer of electricity prepaid tokens.

The upgrade happens after every 31.9 years and it was first launched in 1993.
