Driver bolts after killing cyclist in Mangochi road accident

A 26 year-old cyclist has died on the night of March 8, 2021, at Nyambi Village along Bakili Muluzi Highway while his fellow sustained injuries after being hit by unidentified driver who abandoned the vehicle and fled after the incident.

The cyclist has been identified as Edward Malefula from Nsangala village Traditional Authority Mlumbe in Zomba district.

The culprit was driving Toyota Mark 11 saloon,  registration number SA 4832 from the direction of Namwera heading Mangochi Boma.

Upon arrival at the said place due to overspeeding, he lost control of the motor vehicle after he failed to negotiate a curve and went to the extreme offside of the road where he hit two pedal cyclists who were cycling from the opposite direction.

Following the impact, Malefula sustained severe spine injury and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Majuni Health Centre. 

The other victim sustained multiple cut wounds on both legs and arms and is being treated at the same hospital.

The driver abandoned the motor vehicle and fled the scene without rendering any assistance to the victims.

In the meantime, Police is hunting for the driver and will appear before court to answer a number of charges if apprehended.
