DR EDGAR LUNGU TO BE BURIED IN SOUTH AFRICA

By Vinjeru Ngwira

The family of Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, the former President of the Republic of Zambia, has confirmed that his funeral and burial will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa. This decision aligns with the family’s wish to honour him with a private and dignified farewell.

In an official statement, the family explained that the move reflects their desire to grieve in peace and to celebrate the life of their beloved husband, father, and leader away from public attention.

The Lungu family expressed heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support and messages of condolence received from across the African continent and the international community during this difficult time.

Family Spokesperson Makebi Zulu offered special thanks to the Government of the Republic of South Africa for its respectful cooperation and for supporting the family’s decision to hold a private funeral service.

The family also acknowledged the kind visit by South Africa’s Minister of International Relations, Ronald Lamola, who delivered official condolences on behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa. They described the gesture as deeply touching and appreciated.

As they continue to mourn, the family has appealed for peace, unity, and compassion among all Zambians and supporters across the world, urging everyone to respect the solemnity of the moment.

They also extended sincere thanks to friends, well-wishers, and the general public for their understanding and support regarding the choice to conduct the funeral in South Africa.

Further details concerning the funeral program and burial arrangements will be communicated to both the Zambian and South African public in due course, according to the family.

  1. My view is that no matter the circumstances and differences between the family, the Patriotic Front and the government, Dr. E.C.L as the sixth republican President, he was supposed to rest in Zambia. That situation is not good for the family, the Zambiaan government and the entire African continent.Regional bodies could intervene in the situation.Dr. E.C.L promoted one Zambia one Nation.
