COURT ORDERS DISMISSAL OF TEACHER FOR MISAPPROPRIATING EXAM FEES

The Dowa First Grade Magistrate’s Court has convicted and sentenced a primary school teacher to 18 months suspended sentence for misappropriating examination fees for standard 8 candidates at Manondo Primary School.

The court also ordered the dismissal of the teacher.

The court heard that in September 2022, the accused person, Obed Kasamba Banda, aged 36, was tasked to help learners in paying the examination fees to Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB) through Airtel Money and TNM Mpamba mobile transactions.

However, the accused person did not make the transactions of 19 candidates to MANEB and instead used the money for personal gains, a development that barred the learners from sitting for this year’s Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education (PSLCE) Examinations. Banda has since reinstituted the money to each candidate totalling to K66, 500 following the court order.
