COURT GRANTS BAIL TO MBELE

The Lilongwe Magistrates Court has granted bail to social media activist Joshua Chisa Mbele.

The activist was arrested on Tuesday on two counts; criminal libel contrary to section 200 of the penal code and publication of offensive communication contrary to section 87 of the Electronic Transactions and Cyber Security Act.

Senior Resident Magistrate, Wanangwa Chirwa, has granted Mbele bail on conditions that he presents two sureties non-cash valued at K300,000, pays a K20,000 cash bond and should not express himself in any manner that promotes hate and damage other people’s reputation.

The social media activist has also been ordered to report to the police station once every fortnight.

He has pleaded not guilty to all charges levelled against him.
