A Ten-year-old boy in Mulanje, Edison Machilika, has died as four others have been admitted to Mulanje District Hospital due to suspected food poisoning.
Mulanje Police spokesperson Gresham Ngwira has confirmed the development. Reports indicate that a woman treated weevil-infested maize with Actelic dust. Later 11 children, aged between four and 15 years, prepared and consumed nsima from the flour that was contaminated with the powder.
Meanwhile, the food samples will be sent to Bvumbwe Research Station for examination.
The victims are from Matimati Village, Traditional Authority Njema, in Mulanje District.
