Electricity blackouts will worsen for some days following the collapse of an Escom tower in Machinjiri, Blantyre which caused a national blackout yesterday.
The tower has two lines which transmit electricity from Nkula and Tedzani.
Escom officials have indicated that the tower collapsed as a result of vandalism, with thieves having stolen steel bars from the tower.
A visit to the site shows that people unscrewed the tower’s joints and stole some steel bars, which rendered the tower unstable.
