Police have said 22 people have died in 89 road accidents that have happened this year on the Lilongwe-Kasungu M1 Road, Avant publications has learnt.
This was said as a concern by the police over the alarming rate of road accidents on yhe M1 road.
The concern was issued by the Officer In-charge for Mponela police station, Clement Gulo, who is also Senior Assistant Commissioner of police on Tuesday.
Gulo said that from January to August 31, a total of 89 road accidents have occurred, with at least 22 people losing their lives while 61 others escaping with various degrees of injuries.
Apart from road accidents, Gulo also lamented over the increase in cases of suicide saying people are rushing to take away their lives as a solution to grievances.
Gulo was speaking during a familiarization tour at the newly established police region called Central East in Kasungu. The tour was conducted by Commissioner for the region, Happy Mkandawire.
In his remarks, Mkandawire said there is an increase of criminal activities but he was quick to announce some of the measures and initiatives that have been put in place to contain the situation.
Commissioner Mkandawire also concurred with Gulo over the escalating number of road accidents in the region. He observed that this situation is attributed to the failure of some drivers in following speed limits.
The newly established Central East Region Police covers Kasungu, Mponela, Ntchisi, Nkhotakota, Nkhunga and Dowa.
