Second grade magistrate court in Phalombe has convicted and sentenced a 21 year old man John Munyowa to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour for Obtaining money by false pretence.
The court through the state prosecutor Sergeant Mark Elijah heard that in mid January, 2021 the convict went to the complainant and obtained money amounting to Eighty five thousand Malawi kwacha (Mk85,000.00)
According to the complainant, Munyowa said that he wanted that money to bribe the magistrate and a police officer to gain a favour so that the son of the complainant who was in custody by then for the offence of defilement should be released.
When the complainant saw that time passed without seeing anything done for his son to be released.He reported the matter to Phalombe Police Station who immediately arrest him.
Appearing before the second grade magistrate Mangani, he pleaded guilty for the charge.
In submission, the state prayed for stiffer punishment to send a signal to other tricksters who wanted to reap where they did not cultivated.
Therefore, the court concurred with the state, then he sentenced and convicted him to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour.
John Munyowa 21, hails from Muhowa village Traditional Authority Mkhumba in Phalombe district.
