The Northern Zone Basketball League (NOZOBAL) launched on Sunday, November 10, 2025, at Katoto Basketball Court with a generous sponsorship of K45 million for the next three seasons. This groundbreaking support is set to elevate basketball in the region and provide critical resources for its development.
Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba, who presided over the launch as the league’s sponsor, expressed his vision for the league to serve as a platform to inspire young athletes. He emphasized that the league would not only motivate youth but also identify hidden basketball talent, which could potentially represent Malawi at national and international levels.
Mumba encouraged more individuals and organizations to step forward and support sports in the Northern Region, highlighting the need for increased backing to nurture various sporting disciplines.
In addition to sports, Mumba urged young people and all age groups to register with the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) in preparation for the 2025 tripartite elections. He underscored the importance of youth participation in choosing leaders through voting.
The chairperson of the Northern Zone Basketball League, Chakufwa Chihana Jr., expressed excitement about the sponsorship. He acknowledged that the sport has struggled with limited funding and believed that the prize money would attract and encourage young talent in the region.
Chihana also mentioned that this league would be particularly unique, as it will feature a women’s division for the first time, adding an inclusive edge to the tournament.
With renewed hope and support, the Northern Zone Basketball League is set to mark a new chapter in Malawian basketball, fostering talent and uniting communities through sport.
