Facebook bans a separatist group in Cameroon

Facebook has labelled a separatist group in Cameroon as a violent non-state armed group and banned it from its platform.

The Ambazonia Defense Force is a militant group of the secessionist Northwest and Southwest regions that wants to be called Ambazonia.

Opinion is divided over Facebook’s action.

While others have commended Facebook saying it is right in this action, others have condemned it saying Facebook is increasingly becoming a willing tool to oppress the oppressed.

“Facebook is right in this because the said organisation calling itself a liberation movement has not engaged the terrorist shameless military of la Republique du Cameroun that keeps rendering our people homeless by burning down houses on a daily bases. Next move is for Facebook to label the undisciplined military of Cameroun as a terrorist group. The ICC should be documenting all atrocities and heinous crimes committed on a daily basis against our people by these groups,” said one Cameroonian.

Contrasting this, another Cameroon national has said: “Facebook is a platform where people hear about different things happening around the world”, adding that “it is not supposed to be interfering in what others are doing.”

The agitated stakeholder said “blocking people that are agitating for their freedom is tantamount to breaching their rights and freedom”.
