Police nab traders for violating farm-gate regulations

Police in Mangochi have arrested six traders in different parts of the district for defying farm-gate regulations.

In the morning of July 16, 2021 Mangochi Police officers intensified patrols to enforce measures of controlling the tendency by unscrupulous traders who are roaming around in the villages to buy farm produce from less privileged farmers.

In the process, the team intercepted a Scania truck registration number MH 7618 at Chingo area along Bakili Muluzi Highway carrying four hundred bags of maize belonging to Madalitso Selemani, 27, a smallholder farmer in Kasungu.

The team impounded the truck after they discovered that Seleman violated conditions of his licence which only allows him to buy farm produce from Kasungu, Mzimba and Ntchisi districts.

The team also confiscated five weighing scales from the other five traders which were being used without certification of the Malawi Bureau of Standards.

The traders will appear before court to answer their charges after the completion of paperwork.
