Fisherman gets 2 years IHL for stabbing a fellow

Mangochi Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday June 8, 2021 convicted and sentenced Daiton Kamwendo, 48, popularly known as Lijonto to two years imprisonment with hard labour for unlawful wounding contrary to Section 241(a) of the Penal Code.

During court proceedings, Mangochi Police Prosecutor Sergeant John Makawa told the court that, the accused is a well known fisherman and car sales agent within Mangochi Township.

During the afternoon of May 4, 2021 at Chipalamawamba Fishing dock along Shire River, as a routine it was the victim’s turn to throw his fishing nets into the water, but suddenly Lijonto hijacked him and placed his net instead.

Prosecutor Makawa added that wrangles erupted between the duo and the accused produced a knife and stabbed his fellow on the back and he fell down unconsciously while the accused ran away.

Lijonto who has been on the run for a month was nabbed by Mangochi Police detectives on the night of June 4, 2021 at his house in Chipalamawamba.

Appearing in court, Lijonto pleaded guilty to the charge.

In mitigation, Lijonto asked for the court’s leniency, citing that he is a bread-winner to his families, but prosecutor Makawa asked the court for a stiffer penalty, saying the convict’s behaviour is inhumane and cannot be tolerated in the society.

Passing judgement, Senior Resident Magistrate Rodrick Michongwe concurred with the state for a stiff penalty, hence handed him a two year jail term to serve as a lesson to him and other would-be offenders.

Kamwendo hails from Chipalamawamba Village, Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi.
