CAMA Sits on MERA to take responsibility over fuel prices

The Consumers Association of Malawi (CAMA) is lashing out at the energy regulator, MERA, for failing to take responsibility to reverse the electricity tariff hike.

It follows parliament’s directive overturning the recent 10 percent tariff hike, on grounds that it was ill-timed amid the effects of Covid-19 on consumers.

MERA approved a 10.6 percent hike of the tariff from K94.43 to K104.46 per kilowatt hour.

However, MERA and the electricity supplier ESCOM have been in a blame game with both refusing to take responsibility and reserve the hike.

CAMA Executive Director John Kapito expresses surprise with the development, saying it is MERA’s obligation to determine electricity tariffs.
