Strange water colour (Green) has engulfed some parts of Lake Malawi due to heavy winds which have prevailed for over two weeks,
A spot check by our news crew at Monkey-bay in Mangochi and Salima has established that water at the beautiful lake has turned into green colour.
In an exclusive interview with a government weather expert who opted for anonymity, he confided in Nyanja Online that the heavy winds on the lake have caused the situation.
“The greening is caused by a phytoplankton bloom of the cyanobacteria type called (Kang’ona),” Said our source.

He also said the affected water becomes toxic and itchy, when swallowed in large volumes it can lead to death especially in children.
He added that “The persistent southeastery winds coupled with low water temperatures during this time of the year induces mixing of nutrient rich bottom waters especially in the southern end of the lake. The water then becomes eutrophic.”
He then assured the masses that the greening of the water will fade away within two weeks.
“The phytoplankton bloom in a natural phenomenon that periodically occurs in the lake we had it in 2009, 2013 and 2019.”
