Opposition parties express satisfaction with the newly completed project which the government instituted in the past regime, Tedzani IV, but urge the current Tonse government to ensure efficiency so that many Malawians can benefit as per Malawi government’s dream.
The 18 Megawatts (MW) Tedzani IV Hydropower Station which is currently 100% ready with all the civil works completed and electrical-mechanical works starting with the arrival of various parts and spares.
This is despite delays that were caused due to the COVID-19 pandemic that resulted in works being suspended for 3 months, from March to May 2020.
However, works have been completed ahead of time this April 2021, beating the official commissioning date of September 2021.
The Power Station is being built with a US$52 million Grant Assistance from the Japanese Government through the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) with EGENCO contributing US$4.8million.
Tedzani Power Station is one of the hydropower stations operated by the Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO). It has a total generation capacity of 102MW comprising Tedzani I&II with 40 MW and Tedzani III with 62MW. The addition of the 18MW Tedzani IV will increase its capacity to 120MW.
The current administration has inherited several projects like the Area 18 interchange, Blantyre stadium, Blantyre bypass road and others.
“This is a recommendable job as in most cases, most projects which were instituted by the past regime die natural death once leadership changes”, One commentator said.
