CHAKWERA’S ADDRESS, 28th MARCH 2021

President Lazarus Chakwera is addressing tonight. He says his administration will implement policies to ensure there is money in people’s pockets

Chakwera says as part of implementing better public service management, he has directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to buy from local MSEs including marginalized traders. He has also directed all MDAs to reject awarding projects to a few companies who make bids across many ministries to provide various goods and services.

Chakwera says Malawi’s economic outlook for this year remains very positive. He says the projections are that the GDP is facing a 3.8 percent growth rate.

Chakwera: My administration will be implementing the following policies to ensure there is money in your pocket in line with the Tonse philosophy:

1. I am directing all MDAs to buy supplies locally.
2. I am eager to stop the culture of greed in procurement, for example, allowing a few players to submit multiple applications across the MDAs. Time has come to break with this stupid monopoly. #ChakweraAddress

3. To support local industry I am directing MDAs to procure local goods.

Chakwera: There is no justification for importing uniforms including those for the police, when they can be produced locally. I expect local suppliers to work with respective agencies to raise standards.

Chakwera says on Tuesday this week, the Minister of Agriculture will present a report on how AIP has performed. Chakwera says the programme has been a success.

The President says he is aware that people have planned activities for the Easter holidays but warns that people should not breach the Covid-19 preventive measures.
