Opposition political leaders in the country have described the death of two senior cabinet ministers Lingson Belekanyama and Sidik Mia as a great loss to the nation.
In his condolence message, former president Arthur Peter Mutharika has since called for unity among all Malawians as the country fights COVID-19.
“I wish to share with the entire nation that in difficult times as the one we are going through, it is important to hold hands despite our differences,” wrote Mutharika on his personal Facebook page.
Also in his statement, United Democratic Front (UDF) leader Atupele Muluzi described both Belekanyama and Mia as selfless individuals.
“Through his years, UDF party has known the late Belekanyama as a good friend, humble, hardworking and patriotic citizen of the country,” he said.
As for Mia, Muluzi had this to say: “The country has lost a very dedicated, benevolent and patriotic citizen with an impeccable track record of public service.”
And Leader of Opposition in Parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa said: ” indeed, Malawi has lost two humble and hardworking politicians, whose selfless contribution to the political, social and economic development of the country cannot go unnoticed.”
Meanwhile, President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has declared three days of national mourning in honour of Belekanyama and Mia.-
