The Sports Writers Association of Malawi (SWAM) is intensifying preparations for its 2026 Annual General Meeting (AGM) and World Sports Journalists Day (WSJD) celebrations, scheduled to take place in Salima from November 13 to 15, 2026, while appealing for additional corporate partnerships to ensure the success of the national event.
The three-day gathering is expected to attract more than 200 sports journalists, football legends, sports administrators, corporate representatives and other stakeholders in Malawi’s sports industry.
The event is expected to provide an important platform for professional development, networking, recognition and discussions on the future of sports journalism in the country.
Several Partners Already On Board
SWAM has already secured support from several organisations and individuals who have demonstrated their commitment to the development of sports journalism and sports in Malawi.
The event’s early supporting partners include TNM, WSBet, Football Legends Association, Mighty Wanderers, Dr. Thomson Mpinganjira, Mpira M’mudzi Mwathu and Tree Business Suppliers.
The association has acknowledged their contributions, describing the early support as an encouraging step towards delivering a successful and memorable event.
Their involvement is also expected to encourage other corporate organisations and individuals to partake the initiative.
K51 Million Budget and Growing Financial Needs
The organising committee has disclosed that the approved budget for the celebrations stands at K51 million.
However, rising operational costs since the budget was prepared in April 2026 have created additional financial demands, leaving the association seeking further assistance to bridge the funding gap.
The additional support will contribute towards key activities, including professional training for sports journalists, awards presentations, networking opportunities and other planned programmes.
SWAM says the objective is not only to host a successful AGM but also to create meaningful opportunities that contribute to the growth and professionalism of sports journalism in Malawi.
Corporate Organisations Invited to Partner
As part of its partnership drive, SWAM is inviting companies, institutions, businesses and individuals to support the celebrations through different forms of contributions.
Potential partners can participate through financial sponsorship, branded materials, fuel, accommodation, meals and logistical assistance.
In return, partners will receive brand visibility across event platforms, national media exposure, stage recognition, certificates of appreciation and opportunities to interact directly with sports journalists, football administrators, club owners, legends and corporate leaders.
The association believes the event presents an opportunity for brands to strengthen their public presence while supporting an important sector of Malawi’s sporting industry.
Beyond the AGM: Recognising Sports Journalism
The World Sports Journalists Day celebrations will also provide an opportunity to recognise the contribution of sports journalists in promoting sporting activities, documenting achievements, highlighting challenges and connecting sporting communities.
Sports journalism remains an important part of the sporting ecosystem, providing coverage that informs the public, preserves sporting history and gives athletes and sporting institutions a platform to reach wider audiences.
Through the 2026 celebrations, SWAM aims to strengthen professional standards, encourage collaboration and create opportunities for the next generation of sports journalists.
Salima Set for a National Gathering
With the event just around the corner, preparations are expected to intensify as the association continues engaging potential partners and stakeholders.
The success of the celebrations will depend on collective commitment from the corporate sector, sporting institutions, media organisations and individuals who recognise the importance of credible sports journalism.
SWAM is therefore encouraging prospective partners to come forward and contribute towards making the 2026 AGM and World Sports Journalists Day celebrations a landmark occasion.
