Bangwe All Stars FC delivered a statement performance in the NBS Bank National Division League on Wednesday, edging league leaders Songwe Border United FC 2-1 at Mpira Stadium to secure a crucial three points in their Week 15 assignment.
The hosts drew first blood in the 8th minute when Isaac Mhango inadvertently turned the ball into his own net after Prince Chalera whipped in a dangerous cross, handing Bangwe All Stars an early advantage.
Songwe Border United responded with determination and restored parity in the 31st minute. Emmanuel Munthali unlocked the home defence with a brilliant pass that found Richard Cheyo, who made no mistake in converting to level matters at 1-1.

With the contest finely balanced at the interval, Bangwe All Stars returned for the second half with renewed attacking intent, eventually finding the decisive breakthrough through Upile Kapunje. The forward finished off a well-worked move following an assist from Seleman Mussa to put the hosts 2-1 ahead.
Despite their efforts to salvage a point, Songwe Border United could not find a way past Bangwe All Stars, who held firm to protect their slender advantage until the final whistle and claim a valuable victory against the title contenders.
Speaking after the match, Songwe Border United head of the team, Elias Chirambo, admitted that his side had been unfortunate, arguing that they created numerous scoring opportunities but failed to convert them. He, however, reaffirmed the team’s ambition to lift the league title.
“We created a lot of chances, but we failed to score. It was not our day,” said Chirambo.
On the other side, Bangwe All Stars coach Isaac Jomo applauded his players for their fighting spirit, describing the victory as a timely boost after a challenging run of results.
Jomo said the three points were exactly what his side needed to change their fortunes, adding that the team would continue working to improve its performances in the remaining fixtures. He also identified poor finishing as a persistent weakness, noting that Bangwe All Stars regularly create chances but struggle to turn them into goals.
Despite suffering defeat, Songwe Border United remain at the summit of the NBS Bank National Division League table with 32 points from 15 matches, while Bangwe All Stars occupy 11th position with nine points from the same number of games.
