The Officer-in-Charge for Area 23 Police Unit, Superintendent Shupe Tembo Gumbi, has called for concerted efforts among police, traditional leaders and other security stakeholders to combat criminality in Area 23 and surrounding villages.
Superintendent Gumbi made the call on September 2, 2026, during her maiden address to chiefs, block leaders, councillors and other stakeholders, where she outlined a framework for combating crime in the area.
She urged traditional and community leaders to take an active role in crime prevention initiatives, stressing that security is a shared responsibility.
“We have records showing an upsurge in mob justice cases, which can be reduced if we work together hand in hand,” said Gumbi.
She assured the stakeholders of the police’s readiness to confront criminality head-on, while calling on chiefs, block leaders and other security stakeholders to actively support law enforcement efforts.
Gumbi further encouraged local leaders to spearhead crime prevention programmes, including timely reporting of criminal activities, formation and strengthening of neighbourhood watch teams, and protection of vulnerable groups, particularly women and children.
In his remarks, Tsabango ward Councillor William Ngulube concurred with the new Officer-in-Charge and pledged his support towards efforts aimed at making Area 23 a crime-free community.He further urged chiefs and police to collaborate in enforcement of Lilongwe City Council by-laws,protection of Police structures and vehicles.
“The police vehicles and structures belong to us. We should not allow people from elsewhere to vandalise them,” said Ngulube.
Senior Group Village Head Chiuzira and Block leader for Majiga area, Medson Kalimbuka, spoke on behalf of other chiefs in which they both expressed excitement and pledged their total support in crime fight initiatives .
