Police at Kawale have arrested a 28-year-old watchman, Jackson Kampeya, for allegedly stealing motor vehicle parts and other property valued at K11,931,000 from his employer.
Kawale Police received a complaint from Chigomezgo Rodwell Munyenyembe, the owner of a garage, who reported that several motor vehicle parts had been going missing since employing the suspect as a watchman. The theft came to light when the complainant’s brother attempted to use one of the trucks for a scheduled trip, but the vehicle failed to start after several engine components had been removed.
With the assistance of a mechanic, the vehicles were inspected, confirming that numerous parts had been stolen.
The stolen property included alternators, condensers, and starter motors for Mercedes-Benz, DAF, and TATA trucks, electric wires, and three bags of maize, all valued at K11,931,000.
Following the report, detectives from Kawale Police launched investigations that led to the arrest of the suspect. And subsequently the investigations also resulted in the recovery of some of the stolen items, which the suspect had allegedly sold to vehicle dismantlers at Malanganga.
Jackson Kampeya is expected to appear before court soon to answer a charge of theft by servant.
The suspect hails from Peter Chavula Village, under Traditional Authority Mbwana, in Nkhata Bay District.
