Northern Region basketball players will soon enjoy the opportunity to train and compete during evening hours following a commitment by Eng. Hon. Vitumbiko Mumba to install floodlights at Katoto Basketball Court in Mzuzu. The development is expected to transform basketball activities in the region by providing athletes with more time to practice and participate in competitions after completing their daily responsibilities.
The announcement was made on Saturday, 30 May 2026, during the Northern Region Basketball League finals held at Katoto Basketball Court. The event brought together basketball enthusiasts, players, coaches and officials who witnessed the conclusion of an exciting league season.
Speaking during the finals, Eng. Hon. Vitumbiko Mumba said the decision to install floodlights was aimed at addressing challenges faced by many players who spend most of their daytime hours at work or school. He explained that evening access to the facility will allow athletes to train more consistently and improve their performance.
Mumba noted that sports development requires investment in quality infrastructure and expressed optimism that the project will contribute significantly to the growth of basketball in the Northern Region. He added that improving facilities remains key to nurturing young talent and creating opportunities for future generations.

According to Eng. Hon. Vitumbiko Mumba, electricity connection works at the court are expected to be completed within a week. Once power is connected, installation of the floodlights will begin, paving the way for night-time basketball activities at the venue.
Northern Region Basketball Zone Chairperson Gospel Thandwe Mangwiro praised Eng. Hon. Vitumbiko Mumba for his continued support towards basketball development. He highlighted that the sponsor has invested K20 million in the sport within the region, helping to strengthen league competitions and promote talent development.
Mangwiro welcomed the floodlight initiative, describing it as a major milestone for basketball in the North. He further revealed that the zone’s leadership is considering plans to roof the court in the future so that it can accommodate more activities and provide better playing conditions throughout the year.
Once completed, the project will make Katoto Basketball Court the first basketball facility in the Northern Region to operate under floodlights. The venue is expected to become a centre for major basketball events, including national tournaments. Meanwhile, Moyale Barracks Basketball Team emerged as regional champions and will represent the Northern Region at the upcoming national finals.
