In a significant step toward enhancing community policing and strengthening collaboration with local leadership, the new Officer-in-Charge (OC) for Mangochi Police Station, Assitant Commissioner of Police Limbani Bekete, today embarked on a familiarisation tour to Traditional Authorities Mapira and Mponda, where he met with all chiefs under their jurisdiction.
The tour is part of an ongoing initiative aimed at building strong working relationships between the police and traditional leaders to ensure peace, security, and sustainable development in the district.
During his engagements, Bekete emphasized that traditional leaders are key stakeholders in the promotion of law and order, saying their involvement is vital in fostering trust and effective communication between the police and the public.“Security is vital in every area as it promotes development. Let us join hands in maintaining peace in our communities. Mangochi is one of the districts known for acts of violence, often involving youth who are used to fuel such actions,” he said.
Therefore, Bekete appealed to the chiefs to take a strong stand in guiding and encouraging the youth to refrain from participating in acts of violence, especially during election periods. “This tour allows us to understand each other better, exchange ideas, and commit to working hand in hand,” he added.
A representative of Senior Chief Mponda applauded the OC’s initiative, describing it as timely and commendable, and said it demonstrates the police’s commitment to working closely with local leaders.
Both Senior Chief Mponda and Traditional Authority Mapira commended Mangochi Police for maintaining a strong working relationship with traditional leadership.
However, they requested that Community Policing Forums be provided with reflective jackets and receive specialized training to help them carry out their duties more effectively.
The visit also served as a platform to discuss key community issues, including theft, gender-based violence, child protection, and youth involvement in crime. Both sides agreed on the importance of regular dialogue and sustained collaboration in addressing these challenges.
The familiarisation tour is expected to continue in other areas, reaffirming Mangochi Police’s commitment to inclusive policing and proactive community engagement.
