Today, the 18th July ended dramatic at Immigration officers in Lilongwe.
Patrick Msume, PRO for Immigration in Lilongwe, stated that authorities are conducting investigations to determine the cause of today’s riots at their office.
Msume also mentioned that they are assessing the damaged property and will provide details once the investigation is complete.
The riots erupted when people seeking passports became frustrated with the problems they face on daily basis as they queue into Immigration offices.
One of the concerned individuals said the office closed early without a clear reason, which angered those who had been waiting for assistance.
“Many of us traveled from distant districts to apply for passports, but we are not being helped. Additionally, some passports show as printed in the system but are not being issued; it’s unclear what is happening,” complained one individual.
Passport seekers also complained about being treated poorly by the staff when they tried to enter the office to inquire about their passports.
“We come here in the morning and stay until they close, without being allowed inside.”
During the riot, people broke the office windows and damaged a car parked outside.
Currently, the police are at the office to enhance security, and Msume stated he would not comment further until the investigation is concluded.
