Girl learners implored to report cyber crimes

Female law enforcers from Mangochi Police Station have urged young girls in various secondary schools to report all kinds of sexual abuse, including cyberbullying-related issues, to relevant authorities.

Due to the increased trend of cyber cases targeting young girls, the Malawi Police Service, through its platform “Women Network,” organized a national campaign to rescue young girls from this trap.

Recently, police have received numerous cyberbullying complaints involving young girls, whereby criminals are using social media platforms called “blessers” to entice young girls to send nude pictures in exchange for monetary or material things and blackmail them in the process afterward.

On May 7, 2024, Mangochi Police female officers, led by Superintendent Fanny Mwimaniwa, Investigations Branch Officer, stormed Orama Private Secondary School and St. Monica Girls Secondary School, where young girls were advised to refrain from sending their nudes to men for favors.

“Cyberbullying is an offense that can result in long-lasting emotional effects, suicide, depression, and lack of inner peace. It is punishable by law, and do not hesitate to report if encountered,” Mwimaniwa advised.

Mangochi Police Women Network Chairperson, Inspector Susan Musongole, advised the young girls not to indulge in immoral behaviors due to peer pressure, which might result in dropping out of school. She acknowledged that a girl child faces many challenges in life; however, early marriage is not a good solution.

Constable Daines Chitsulo warned them to refrain from drug and substance abuse. She also challenged them to work hard in their studies, be inspired by successful women in the country, and choose their idols in order to become responsible citizens and leaders of tomorrow.

The school’s management from both schools commended the female officers for the initiative and requested frequent visits.

The female platform has scheduled to visit more schools in the district on the same mission.
