“SONA FULL OF EMPTY PROMISES” Mary Navicha

The drama at Parliament persists as Mary Navicha, appointed by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as the leader of the opposition in Parliament, delivers her response to the State of the Nation Address (SONA) at the gates of Parliament Buildingin Lilongwe. This unconventional move comes after DPP MPs were denied entry into the Parliament Building after a 2 day stay away order by the Speaker of the August House.

Navicha’s decision to respond to the SONA outside Parliament’s gates defies procedural norms, as traditionally, such responses are delivered within the August House.

The Speaker of Parliament emphasized yesterday that Navicha was expected to respond to the SONA inside Parliament, following the Leader of the Opposition.

The previous day, Navicha and other DPP members opposed this decision, arguing that the designated Leader of the Opposition, Nankhumwa, is not a member of the DPP.

In her critique of the SONA, Navicha criticized the President for what she deemed as empty promises, asserting that the proposed initiatives would not materialize while Malawians endure hardships, including hunger and loss of life.
