MAN APPREHENDED FOR VANDALIZING BWB INFRASTRUCTURE

Working on a tip from well-wishers, Blantyre Water Board (BWB) security team rounded-up and apprehended a Ndirande resident suspected to be among criminals that vandalized the Intake Tower House at the Mudi Dam.

In December 2023, Mudi Catchment Guards noticed that some wooden planks (floorboards) leading to the intake tower house including safety handrails along the bridge were stolen. The thieves further broke into the intake tower house and stole checker plates that are used to cover the valves base.

The BWB security team led by the Board’s Security Officer Pilirani Chikoko went on a search for the suspects and apprehended one Moffat Elaton offering for sale some of the vandalized hand-rail bars. He admitted to have been involved in this theft and that the items were being sold at Ndirande market.

The total value of the vandalized and stolen items is estimated at MK8 million.
