In an effort to foster unity among the youth, Karonga-based citizen Willy Yabwanya Phiri orchestrated an inspiring series of friendly matches at the Karonga Stadium on Wednesday, December 20, 2023. The event featured six teams from Karonga District, showcasing a display of camaraderie and sportsmanship.
The matches saw the participation of formidable teams, where Karonga United Sisters FC triumphed over St Mary’s Sisters FC with a 3-1 victory in girls’ football. Meanwhile, Karonga Giants FC secured a hard-fought win against Karonga United Reserve with a lone goal courtesy of Madalitso Kamanga.
Baka City FC clinched a narrow victory against Karonga United FC, sealing the game with a late goal by Lupakisho Kazingo in the 88th minute. In a heartfelt gesture, Willy Yabwanya Phiri, the driving force behind these matches and also the Champion of the Malawi Grassroots Soccer Development Foundation, generously donated 10 pairs of soccer boots each to Baka City FC and Karonga United FC, aiming to motivate and uplift the teams ahead of their Super League matches.
Expressing his delight, Willy Yabwanya Phiri highlighted the pride of having two Karonga District teams participating in the Tnm Super League. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline, especially during the anticipated Karonga derby matches.
Ramzy Simwaka, the General Secretary of Karonga United FC, conveyed gratitude for the donation, acknowledging the significance of receiving 10 pairs of soccer boots as a tremendous gesture of support.
Chauka Mwasinga, the esteemed Guest of Honor and Chairman of the Northern Region Football Association, commended Willy Yabwanya Phiri for his visionary initiative, emphasizing its role in uncovering hidden talents among the youth, particularly in girls’ soccer. He urged well-wishers to extend support to Baka City FC, a recently promoted team to the Super League, to ensure they have the resources needed to thrive and maintain their position in the league.
