The University of South Africa (Unisa) has moved swiftly to dispel the notion that it granted honorary degrees to social media influencer Pemphero Mphande and musician Patience Namadingo. In a recently issued statement available on its official website, Unisa distanced itself from these claims, which surfaced via the media.
The statement from Unisa clearly states that the university was taken by surprise upon learning that Pemphero Mphande, Patience Namadingo, and a certain Mansoor Sharif Karim had asserted that they received honorary doctorates from Unisa in 2020, 2022, and 2023, respectively.

However, Unisa emphasized that these three individuals were not among the candidates who were considered and approved for the conferment of honorary doctorates in the years 2020, 2021, and 2023.
This swift response by Unisa underscores the importance of maintaining the integrity of academic honors and ensuring that such recognitions are accurately attributed. It serves as a reminder that institutions like Unisa take their degree-granting process seriously and are committed to upholding the standards and protocols associated with such distinctions.
