54% ROAD ACCIDENTS DECREASE IN LILONGWE DURING 2022 FIRST HALF

Lilongwe Police has for the past six months, January to June 2022, registered a decrease in road accidents compared to corresponding period in 2021.

This year, the station has recorded 460 road accidents compared to 1002 registered from January to June in 2021.

The 2022 first half has also seen a decrease in road accidents fatalities, 55, compared to 62 lives lost during same period in 2021.

Of the 55 fatalities this year, 28 are pedestrians, 12 motorcyclists, 8 passengers, 4 drivers and 3 pedal cyclists.

Again, of the 55 fatalities this year, 40 are males, 9 females and 6 children, compared to 45 males, 5 females and 12 children who perished on the road in 2021 from January to June.

In another development, Lilongwe Police has the same period also reduced crime with 1859 cases registered compared to 1907 cases in 2021 during same period under review.

Defilement cases have also tremendously decreased this year as 44 cases were recorded as compared to 76 cases registered in 2021 representing a 42 percent reduction.

However, suicide cases have gone up by 41.7 percent since January to June in 2022.

A total of 12 suicide cases registered from January to June compared to 5 cases registered in 2021 with Traditional Authority (T/A) Kalolo topping the list of the 16 T/As under Lilongwe Police, 5 and 2 cases in 2022 and 2021 respectively.

Meanwhile, Lilongwe Police remain vigilant in providing safety and security to further register significant progress in traffic and crime management.
