The fisherman who went missing after their canoe capsized due to heavy Mwera wind has been found floating on June 8, 2022 around Mpwepwe area along Lake Malawi.
The deceased have been identified as Yusuf Pius, 22, from Likulungwa Village Traditional Authority Katuli in Mangochi.
According to police findings, on the morning of June 5, 2022 the two fishermen including the deceased went fishing on the waters of Lake Malawi in one canoe despite strong wind.
In the process, their canoe got capsized and all of them fell into the water. Luckily, his fellow swam to the shore while Pius drowned and went missing.
Members of the community organized a search party that later found Pius’s dead body floating after 3 days.
The Police and medical personnel visited the scene and suffocation has been indicated as the cause of the death.
Meanwhile police in the district are appealing to fishermen to pay attention to weather forecast and avoid getting into the waters during threatening weather to avoid similar incidents.
