Batatawala spends one more night in cooler

The Blantyre Magistrates Court has adjourned until tomorrow as a day it will give a ruling on bail application in a case in which Abdul Karim Batatawala is being accused of defrauding the Malawi Government.

Batatawala has been formerly been charged with conspiracy to inflate the market price of 500 lockers and money laundering amounting to over K3.5 billion.

Last week, Abdul Karim Batatawala, Elvis Thodi, Fletcher Nyirenda and Limbani Chawinga were arrested for being suspected of defrauding the Government through the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services.

Until Sunday at 6:30 pm, Batatawala was admitted at Shifa Private Hospital after he fell ill a day after his arrest.

During the hearing, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) prayed to the court to deny the accused bail as there is a likelihood of him evading trial.

The defence lawyers in the case assured the court that the accused cannot run away as he owns a Malawian passport and that he has well-established businesses in the country.

Meanwhile, Senior Magistrate Martin Chipofya is expected to deliver his ruling on the bail application on Tuesday, 21 December at 9 am.
