NEW ERA FOR MALAWI FOOTBALL BEGINS

Malawi takes a significant step forward in football development today, Saturday, 24 May 2025, as Mchinji hosts the official launch of a national second-tier league. This initiative is the result of a partnership between the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and NBS Bank.

The newly established NBS Bank National Division League aims to close the gap between the elite Super League and the regional leagues. It offers a vital platform for emerging players to develop and showcase their talent on a broader stage.

FAM’s Director of Competitions and Communications, Gomezgani Zakazaka, welcomed the development, calling it the realization of a long-standing vision within the sport.

“This initiative is intended to give more players national exposure—especially those who might otherwise go unnoticed,” said Zakazaka. “Historically, most national team players have come from the Super League. With this league, we hope to broaden the talent pool and provide greater opportunities.”

To mark the beginning of this new era, Mchinji Community Ground will host the opening match between Mchinji Villa FC and Mitundu Baptist, a symbolic start to a more inclusive and competitive football system in the country.
