Police in Koche, Mangochi have arrested a 37-year-old man, Alubi Saini, in connection with a violent robbery that occurred on July 3, 2025, at Chikundo village under Traditional Authority Mponda, where a 78-year-old man, Lawrence Gremu, was attacked and robbed of his Humber bicycle.
The victim is currently receiving treatment at Mangochi District Hospital.
According to Police findings, on the said date, Gremu was clearing his garden in preparation for the next farming season when Saini and his accomplice approached him pretending to be looking for piece work. After he informed them that he had no money to offer, the duo pretended to leave.
However, moments later, one of the suspects grabbed the victim’s bicycle from the garden. When Gremu questioned the action, the suspects turned violent, slapped him, and one of them grabbed the victim’s panga knife, hacking him multiple times on the head before fleeing the scene with the bicycle.
Gremu was initially rushed to Koche Community Hospital where he was admitted, but due to the seriousness of his injuries, he was referred to Mangochi District Hospital for further treatment.
Following investigations, Police arrested Alubi Saini on July 5, 2025, and also successfully recovered the stolen bicycle. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspect.
Saini who hails from Nsinje village, Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi is expected to appear in court soon to answer a charge of robbery after the completion of paperwork.
