A two-year-old girl, Esnart Mustafa, tragically drowned in a nearby pond while her mother was engaged in household chores.
The incident occurred on the evening of April 7, 2025, at Ntiyala Village, under Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi District.
According to reports, Esnart was playing at home while her 25-year-old mother, Sarah Ibra, attended to chores. Upon realizing that her daughter was missing, she began searching and proceeded to a nearby pond, where she discovered a cup and pail, items the child had been playing with floating on the water.
Alarmed by the discovery, she called for help from neighbors, who joined in the search. Sadly, the child was found lifeless in the pond shortly afterward.
The incident was reported to Koche Police Unit, who responded to the scene alongside a medical practitioner. A postmortem examination confirmed that the cause of death was suffocation.
Police have since urged parents and guardians to closely supervise young children at all times, emphasizing the importance of constant care and attention to prevent such tragedies.
