Teacher dies after consuming beer on an empty stomach

A 37-year-old teacher at Mpale Catholic Primary School, identified as Robert Pronton Chaopa, has died after consuming excessive beer on an empty stomach in Mangochi.

The incident occurred on the evening of February 8, 2026, at Changali Village, Traditional Authority Chimwala, in Mangochi District.

Police investigations reveal that Chaopa had a habit of excessive alcohol consumption.

On February 6, 2026, Chaopa went to a drinking joint within the village, where he consumed alcohol excessively to the extent that he failed to walk. Friends later assisted him to his house and left him seated on a chair while asleep.

He was not seen thereafter until February 8, 2026, at around 18:00 hours when neighbours noticed a foul smell coming from his house. They alerted the landlord, who opened the door and found him seated lifeless on the chair.

The matter was reported to Chimwala Police Unit, and police officers, accompanied by a medical practitioner from Ukalanga Health Centre, visited the scene where the body was found in a partially decomposed state.

A postmortem examination conducted revealed that he succumbed to hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar levels).

Meanwhile, Police in the district are advising members of the public, especially beer drinkers, to ensure they eat enough food before consuming alcohol, as excessive drinking on an empty stomach may pose serious health risks.

Chaopa hailed from Nthanje village, Traditional Authority Kanyenda, in Nkhotakota District.
