President-Elect Mutharika to Address the Nation

Malawi’s President-Elect, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, will deliver a national address today at 10:30 AM following his victory in the September 16 presidential election.

Mutharika, leader of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), won with 3,035,249 votes—equivalent to 56.8% of the total valid ballots cast. Incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera has since conceded defeat and congratulated Mutharika, calling for a peaceful transition of power.

The incoming administration has outlined several priorities aimed at transforming the nation. These include reviving the struggling economy, curbing high inflation and foreign exchange shortages, and creating employment opportunities for the youth. Mutharika has also pledged major investments in infrastructure to improve roads, energy supply, and public services.

Strengthening the rule of law and intensifying the fight against corruption will also be central to his leadership agenda.

At 85, Mutharika brings decades of experience in law and economics, qualities that many believe will shape his decision-making as he prepares to take office. His inauguration is expected within 30 days of the official results.
