NYASA DONATES K125 MILLION TO BOOST HUNGER RESPONSE

Malawi’s hunger-response initiatives have received a considerable boost following a K125 million donation from Nyasa Tobacco Company, a contribution that government officials describe as both timely and impactful. The support comes as many communities continue to experience food shortages driven by erratic harvests and rising demand for relief supplies.

Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha accepted the cheque on behalf of the government and expressed gratitude for Nyasa’s commitment to national welfare. He noted that the company’s intervention demonstrates the importance of corporate participation in addressing the country’s humanitarian challenges.

Mwanamvekha further acknowledged the various local organisations and private-sector players that have been consistently contributing to the hunger-relief programme. He emphasised that their continued support strengthens government efforts to reach affected households more efficiently.

The minister explained that the government has already designed a combination of short-term, medium-term, and long-term strategies to enhance food security. These measures, he said, aim to meet the national target of ensuring adequate maize stocks and reducing the risk of recurring hunger crises.

Nyasa Tobacco Company Chairperson Fleetwood Haiya said the donation reflects the company’s broader corporate social responsibility mission. He highlighted that many Malawians supported by the initiative are farmers who maintain close ties with the tobacco sector, making the contribution both strategic and necessary.

Haiya added that Nyasa remains committed to supporting communities, especially during periods of heightened vulnerability. He expressed hope that the company’s contribution would inspire other stakeholders to expand their support for national relief programmes.

Authorities say the K125 million donation will bolster ongoing interventions designed to cushion communities most affected by food shortages. The support is expected to improve distribution processes, strengthen relief efforts, and help ensure that vulnerable families receive essential assistance across the country.
