National Bank of Malawi (NBM) has announced that the 2025 Varsity Games will officially be launched in Mzuzu, marking another major milestone in promoting youth sports development in the country.
According to NBM’s Marketing and Corporate Affairs Manager, Akossa Hiwa, the launch represents the third and final phase of the bank’s K1.58 billion sports sponsorship package unveiled earlier this year. The sponsorship aims to boost the growth of various sporting activities among university students nationwide.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lilongwe, Hiwa highlighted that NBM remains fully committed to nurturing young talent through sports, noting that the initiative aligns with the bank’s corporate social responsibility goals of empowering Malawi’s youth.
“The Varsity Games are an important platform for students to showcase their talent and teamwork spirit, and we are proud to be part of that journey,” said Hiwa.
Tertiary Education Students Sports Association of Malawi (TESSAM) Vice General Secretary, Noel Kapito, described NBM’s involvement as a “game changer,” emphasizing that the support will greatly improve the standards and organization of the annual games. He further assured the bank that TESSAM will deliver an exciting and well-organized event that meets the expectations of all stakeholders.
Meanwhile, Basketball Association of Malawi (BASMAL) Vice Secretary, Edda Mkombezi, expressed appreciation for NBM’s continued investment in sports, saying the inclusion of more disciplines will help create opportunities for more students to participate and excel in different sporting categories.
