John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, the Nigerian comic actor, after getting treatment in a Lagos hospital, his adopted son, Monday Diamond Ani, confirmed on Saturday night. Reports of his death earlier in the day were dismissed by Ani, who clarified that his father is in critical condition at the hospital’s intensive care unit.
Mr Ibu’s health has been precarious, with him battling constant clotting of blood on his leg and other health challenges for years. In October 2023, he publicly sought financial assistance for his ailment, which led to a second surgery and ultimately the amputation of his leg in November 2023.
Born on October 17, 1961, in Nkanu West local government of Enugu State, Mr Ibu rose to fame for his comic roles in over 200 Nollywood movies, including titles like “Mr Ibu” (2004), “Mr Ibu 2” (2005), and “Mr Ibu in London” (2005), among others. He briefly ventured into music, releasing songs titled “This Girl” and “Do You Know” in 2020.
Despite his current health challenges, Mr Ibu remains an iconic figure in the Nigerian entertainment industry, cherished for his comedic talents and contributions to Nollywood.
