Man jailed 5 years (IHL) over robbery

The Lilongwe Senior Resident Magistrate’s (SRM) Court has convicted and sentenced a 20-year-old man, Moses Robert to spend 5 years in jail for robbery which contradicts sections 301(2) of the Penal Code.

The court heard through state prosecutor Sub Inspector Patrick Phambana from Kawale Police Station that on December 31,2025 around 22:00 hours Robert robbed K450,000 cash and a smart watch from a certain business man as he was going to his shop, for he used to sleep at his shop at Ngwenya in Area 24 as security measure.

Sub Inspector Patrick Phambana further told the Court that on this fateful day the suspect demanded money for cigarettes, the victim at first produced K400 which he denied as not enough and as he produced an additional K2000 to meet his demands and at this time the convict became aggressive, he produced a pair of scissors threatening the victim that any resistance will attract an assault. He went ahead to search him by force ant took away the aforementioned items.

Then, the victim reported the matter at Area 24 Police Unit the next day on new year, where investigations were instituted which led to his arrest as he was offering on sale the wrist watch.

Appearing in Court, Moses Robert pleaded guilty to the charges leveled against him.

In his submission, Sub Inspector Patrick Phambana Prayed for deterrent sentence citing that such cases are on the rise and the convict benefited from crime proceeds.

In his mitigation, the convict begged for forgiveness.

Passing Judgement, his worship Shukurani Kumbani quashed him and sentenced him to 60 months for robbery count.

Moses Robert hails from Namadidi Village Traditional Authority Mulumbe in Zomba District.
