President Lazarus Chakwera has boosted Malawi’s national football team by donating K50 million ahead of their COSAFA Cup tournament in South Africa. The support comes as the Flames prepare to compete in this year’s regional championship.
Presidential Press Secretary Anthony Kasunda confirmed the donation, revealing it followed a meeting between President Chakwera and Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Fleetwood Haiya. The discussions focused on strengthening support for national football.
Kasunda also announced that President Chakwera had accepted Haiya’s invitation to become the official Patron of both the Malawi Flames (men’s team) and the Scorchers (women’s team). In this new role, the President is expected to inspire the nation to offer strong moral, financial, and material backing to the teams.

“This patronage means His Excellency will now be at the forefront of rallying national support whenever the Flames or Scorchers are representing Malawi,” said Kasunda.
Meanwhile, the Flames departed Malawi on Wednesday for South Africa. Their opening COSAFA Cup Group B match is scheduled for Thursday at Toyota Stadium, where they will face Lesotho.
