In the National Address delivered on Sunday night, His Excellency Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has said that he wants to turn around the mining sector, so that it becomes the back borne of the Country’s industrialisation, wealth and job creation.
He said that over dependency on Agriculture had made previous governments to pay little attention to the mining sector.
The President said that he wants a more regulated mining sector and increased investment in the sector.
Dr Lazarus Chakwera revealed that government is taking steps to establish the Mining Regulatory Authority, to oversee all matters of mining.
He also said that the government will fund the establishment of the National Mining Company (a State Enterprise).
In the address the President also ordered the Reserve Bank of Malawi to open gold and other mineral markets in strategic places.
Dr. Chakwera said that the Ministry of Mining will be making more announcements on all steps that it will be taking to turn around the mining sector.
